During Mexico's colonial times, A rural priest becomes ill far out in the countryside and is brought to a heathen hut to rest and be cured of his ailments. What follows is a wild ride into purgatory; with flailing, punishment, lava and hell itself manifesting within him. Whether his journey is a metaphor for his sins or a very real prison and hellish journey is not fully clear. Whatever it may be, the journey in this film is as thrilling as it is mesmerizing in all its horrific beauty.
